Week (well month or two) in war gaming

Hi guys.

First off I know how crap I have been updating my blog, the nuances of social media do seem to elude me somewhat! But never fear is have been busy in the hobby and have produced quite a lot of models in the last couple of months. I have been pretty much been solely working on my Dark Eldar Kabal the Crimson Talons and they are coming along quite nicely even if I d say so myself.  I have made some large purchases for the army including a Forgeworld Tantalus..amazing models but what a ball ache it is to put the get her!

First off let’s have a look at my first completed Kabalite Warrior squad.

For my first fully painted squad I am pretty happy with these guys. I am using my airbrush to do some orbital shading on them by applying black from low angles then white from above. This technique adds a slight gradient to the purple of the armour. Ideally this works better on brighter colours but I really wanted the 3 stages of colour for the edge highlighting which I think achieves the best effect. For the weapons it is simply Vallejo Black metal with a drybrush of Necron compound. I am not 100% happy with this and I am considering changing the colour on the weapons casing. On later models I have gone back and painted all the weapons bayonets red. The significance to this in my crazy mind is that these are this colouring is the reason they are called the Crimson Talon’s and this theme has been continued throughout the army.

Next for your reading/viewing pleasure let’s have a gander at my Tantalus.

This model truely is a beast and now I have completed it and its in my collection I am chuffed to bits. This was not always my attitude as I wanted to through it out the man cave window on numerous occasions. Let’s start with how frustrating the damn thing was to put together. Hardly any of the parts fit together and most of the resin was warped in one place or another. There were numerous miscastings and holes that should have been there that simply didn’t exist. I ordered this item off eBay and did get it cheaper than direct from forge world, but if I has ordered it from them it would have been back to them with I half an hour of the box being opened. With that not being an option, I gritted my teeth and got on with the job in hand. After a few hours of sanding, filling, dremmeling (word?), drilling, pinning, magnetising and even steaming it finally fit together and all the parts were straight. After all that painting was actually simple and a joy to do. I painted it in parts to allow the airbrush easier access and as I knew everything would fit bactogether I was confident this was the best method for the job. My technique for my vehicles is to paint black in the centre of all the panels then while leaving a gap of some of the grey primer paint the panels edges with white. When the purple is then gradually built up it leaves a nice intense purple in the centre and helps emphasise the edge highlights. My favourite part of this model is the huge sail and I really enjoyed painting it. Similar process to hull but with more conventional preshading. Here I want to add how much I love Vallejo model air scarlet paint, it is such a nice intense red and is absolutely perfect for what I had in mind. All the metals on this model were painted with copper highlighted with bright brass and then had a sepia wash which just added an almost glow effect.
Overall the Tantalus was a nightmare but I it is one of my favourite models across my whole collection. I will eventually post a picture of it on its custom base which just added to the nightmarish process.

Next up 2 fully magnetised Talos/Cronos engines.

To start I would like to thank Kiblam whose YouTube video I followed to magnetise these little beauties. After watching multiple times it was a simple process to have every weapon system completely magnetised to allow me to use any configuration of them. This also helped with the painting as I was able to paint all parts together and with batch painting techniques it was a relatively speedy job. As you will have noticed from the pictures I have veered away from purple and red with these chaps. I have done this as I want my coven units to appear to be a mercenary force my Kabal employs. As of yet I haven’t chosen a name for the Coven and but I am planning on using the white hand transfer for their symbol so will be something to do with that. The greens I used are Incubi Darkness and Syberite Green. These 2 paints were lovely to paint with and did not require many layers which is always nice. My favourite parts of these models are the poison/drug bottles. All of these I have done green up to a very bright scorpion green. After the colour was finished I then painted them with ‘ardcoat to give the impression of them being glass containers. Thisight not be overly evident in the pictures but does look good in real life.
I  happy with this pair and will be buying another for my planned full coven army in the future.

Next up my favourite models GW make.

I absolutely love these models, they are so cool and are just a fantastic sculpt. I constructed these a while ago and didn’t really know about magnetising weapon options and I have them set up for anti infantry with shredders and splinter cannons. I am not to disappointed by this as my group isn’t very WISIWIG so don’t really care. I will be buying another box though so I can magnetise all of the heavy/special weapon options. I have stuck to a similar theme to my kabalite warriors for armour and cloth. The wings were done using the airbrush and I  very happy with them. The bat like wings were built up from Vallejo grey black simply adding white every stage. Once I was happy with the colour graduation I sprayed the wings with a few coats of gloss varnish to give them a wet looking effect. This works well with the contrasting satin finish of the feather wings and the models armour. For the feather wings I wanted a falcon/eagle type effect as all I ever see them is done grey so fancied a change. Simply built up shades of brown up to off white then added a heavy sepia wash and I am happy with the finished result. For the bases I cut them off the slotta keeping the rocks on most of them. Then mounted them on cork tiles broken up to look like tops of rocks/boulders. I then added sand then painted to look like rock and river silt. Once dried I then applied Vallejo choppy water effect to cover all the sand and some of the cork. This gives them the look of landing on rocks jutting out of a moving river. This is s theme I have done for all my flyer/skimmer/jetbike bases and I thought the scourges and in the future the Helions would benefit from for continuity in the army.

Here is a group shot including my Scourge’s a second unit of kabalites the majority of a unit of haywire wyches 3 venoms and my conversion of the main man Duke Silicus.

image

The wyches I have carried on with the same theme as the kabalite warriors the venoms I have tried to mirror the same technique as the Tantalus but I decided to tint the windows. I have seen this done before using a tamyia paint I don’t own so I simply mixed red with some gloss varnish and then painted the mixture to the insides. I really like the effect and thinks it makes them look a little more.menacing. I do still need to paint the fold metal framework on the windows which I am delaying until my last venom is also complete. The Duke is made of buts of kabalitw warrior, wyches, scourges and even has a modified wood elf cloak. Here are some WIP pics.

I will admit I have stolen the basic conversion from Kiblam for this model but have made some tweeks of my ow ie adding the cloak and the shoulder spike I used are different as well as the legs. Painting wise I realise the group shot he is tough to see in, so I will describe him in a little more detail. His armour is very much inline with the rest of the army, I airbrushed the cloak using the same process as the Tantalus sail and I have t admit I really think it has worked. Because the Duke has really special swords that poison on a 2+ and ignore armour on a 5+ I decided I wanted to make them look like they were emanating with vile poisons. I did this using the airbrush to apply the same greens as I did with the Talos poison canisters then gloss varnished the weapons for added effect. I am very proud of this model and can’t wait to add him to a 16 man splinter born squad blasting away from the decks of the mighty Tantalus… Mwhahhahahaha…..

Anyway that is pretty much all I have to share at the moment. On my paint desk at the moment is 9 basecoated reaver jetbikes, a small Incubi squad another unit of Kabalites and another unit of haywire wyches. As soon as those guys are all complete I will be posting again..hopefully not with another 2 months wait.

Thanks for reading my ramblings and feel free to comment all advice is welcome.

Cheers guys.
